Echidna wanted to allow only the Witch of Gluttony to appear before Subaru in the Witch's Tea Party, but Typhon the Witch of Pride jumped the line to test whether Subaru was a "good guy" or a "bad guy." Unsurprisingly, Subaru is a good guy who thinks he's a bad guy. Sounds like a regular human trying his best.
Typhon's test shattered Subaru's self-image into many pieces and suddenly a magical girl arrived to pummel him with punches which healed him with love. Minerva's eyes aren't filled with tears of sadness. She's the Witch of Wrath, so she was just angry at Subaru for letting himself fall apart like that.
Finally, Daphne the Witch of Gluttony appeared so she could answer Subaru's questions about the Great Mabeasts of the White Whale, the Black Snake, and the Great Rabbit. Daphne's logic of creating such terrible monsters was to give people something to eat so they would never go hungry. Of course, people should expect to be eaten in return since Nature is terrible. She explained how the many individual rabbits of the Great Rabbit share a single collective mind and are all attracted to mana, so there might be a way to trap them all together to destroy them all at the same time.
