The combination of a short stage, pancake flat course, and strong gusts of cross tailwinds set a new average speed record for a Giro stage. Several echelons formed along the way on Stage 7 from Matera to Brindisi, causing nervousness and crashes, but eventually the riders all came back together for a field sprint, won by Arnaud Démare, his third stage win for the 2020 Giro. The first rider across the finish line traveled the 143 km course in 2:47:28, setting an average speed of 51.234 kph, the fastest Giro stage ever.
