Arnaud Demare jokingly celebrates crossing the finish line over the Sestriere
on his second of three passes of the mountain top finishing circuit.
The original route of the original Queen Stage of the 2020 Giro included two difficult climbs, the Col d'Izoard and the Montgenèvre in the French Alps, before finishing on the Sestriere climb. Due to rising cases of COVID-19 in France, the border between France and Italy was closed, leading the race organizers to redesign the last 75 km of the stage. The modified stage made the riders climb the Sestriere three times, which was eventually won by Tao Geoghegan Hart of INEOS Grenadiers over Jai Hindley of Team Sunweb, reversing the order of the finish on Stage 18.
