Filler within Filler Shippuuden continues. Tsunade drinks sake. The masked man reveals himself and his plan to Neji and the other Konoha ninjas.
Episode 440 - "The Jiraiya Ninja Scrolls: Naruto the Hero - The Caged Bird"
Heh.
Let me tell you, I've been drinking harder stuff than sake to get through this season of Naruto filler.
That was a decent twist to make Neji's dead father reanimated by Orochimaru's jutsu, but it doesn't explain how or why Orochimaru brought him back. Not only that, the lame device of being bound by regret to the world of the living was a convenient excuse not to involve Orochimaru further to undo the jutsu.
Everybody's all friends and it's time to go home, right? BOOM! Uh, no.
The caged bird fighting destiny was rehashed again for Neji's narrative, but at least it made me notice a couple of things. First, it confirms that these events in Jiraiya's story take place after the chuunin exams. It was a nice touch for Neji to make sure Naruto didn't hear the nice things he was going to say about him. And second, Neji's sacrifice where he saved Naruto's life had the image of a firebird, so this revisiting of the caged bird finding its freedom added another layer of symbolism.
As if those Akatsuki mercenaries would just take off after being told the job was done and they didn't even get to kill anybody. I guess we'll find out whether Sasori got his other artist friend Deidara to showcase his art, but it looks like the Konoha teams completed their mission to bring back the missing ninjas.
Yahiko, dying before Nagato and Konan, again. Team Jiraiya never did have good luck.
This filler isn't over yet. Tsunade, pass me that hooch!
