Nice thinking, Neji. Not only did his solution to the logic puzzle account for spoilers, but he also played the proctor by making him confirm those chakra strikes were signals to the other classrooms instead of some other commotion. Yup, Neji's going to make jounin in one shot.

 

The second part of the written exam always makes the teams put their whole team first. Don't these chuunin candidates get this by now? What a way to make those teams with sensory skills turn their advantage to a disadvantage.

 

Thanks to Neji, too many teams passed, so Temari announces a race to the Sand Village. Only the first 10 teams get to take the next part of the chuunin exams. There's not supposed to be any fighting to eliminate teams along the way, which is allowed during the second part of the exam anyway, but ninjas excel at cheating.

Fubuki's image of an elegant lady for Kongou died a pretty quick death. She still has eyes for Akagi, but I think that's because she didn't notice that she has a thing for popping bubble wrap. I'm beginning to think none of the ship girls are normal...

 

Shimakaze is supposed to be a fast destroyer, but the character is also hyper and has a very short attention span.

 

Kongou may be crazy, and who wouldn't from being born in Britain before being transferred to Japan, but her sisters are just as crazy... for her.

 

I find it hilarious when voice actors try to mimic an English speaker trying to use Japanese, but it just sounds like slower louder Japanese with sprinkled in English words spoken with a Japanese accent. Apparently, saying bad English words doesn't get censored... Yes, she actually said "Shit!"

I'll tell you, the only time I ever heard English spoken with an American accent by a seemingly native speaker was in a kid show called Shugo Chara!. Don't judge me - it was a cute show!

 

Kongou is crazy... for the admiral!

Aw man, that better not have been another death montage starring Naruko.

 

I've greyed out while running before. The funny thing about it is that you can keep the tunnel vision going as long as you don't stop. I stopped, and had to hug a crosswalk light for about a minute.

 

I'm surprised, and bit annoyed, that no mentions of the handicaps the kids had at the training camp were supposed to help them. Naruko being made to use mountain bike handlebars gave him the strength and practice to ride and sprint while seated, which he used to good effect this episode.

 

I said last episode that I expected Naruko to impress even Makishima with his sprint climbing. Yup.

That's right, Onoda. Naruko had something good to eat. I like how Makishima just let that awkwardness slide.

 

Tadokoro is no dummy. Of course he told Naruko to learn how to climb. His bodyweight made that a given. Naruko wasn't having it, though.

Wow, it's a good thing Joseph is such a pure-pure boy, otherwise God would not have stopped Michael from punishing Maria.

 

That was a neat reference to Jesus' saying that the rain falls on the righteous and the unrighteous. In context, that comes from the "love your enemies" sermon starting at Matthew 5:44, because Joseph said he loved his neighbor Maria, which caused an actual state of grace. Although, sending Ezekiel down may end up more punishment than grace in Maria's eyes.

 

Hah! Talk about obeying the letter of the law. If Ezekiel didn't see Maria use ostentatious magic, then she doesn't know who used it!

 

Of course Ezekiel is a white dove with a cross on her chest.

 

Owls are raptors, right? Time to establish pecking order.

I did like all the sports anime homages they made.

Nice running joke with Ange getting Salamandine's name wrong. Alpha wolf dominance play too.

 

Vivian was a right cute little dragon baby.

 

These dragon ladies must be very tough if being pinned by a floating motorcycle is no big deal and Vivian's mom can stand up afterwards.

 

Yeah, Vilkiss. Rub some dirt on it!

 

Song of Creation cancels out Song of Destruction? That's neat.

The most important clue left by Kagenui about what has happened to Oshino is how she explained to Araragi that Aberration Hunters usually create a proxy like Yotsugi to prevent themselves from becoming an aberration themselves. The problem, she says, is not becoming one, like Araragi becoming a vampire so many times to heal himself in trying to save Nadeko after she became the White Snake God, but getting used to the idea that he can become one.

Judgment in the afterlife doesn't always have to be so full of tension.

 

I think the only reason these two needed to be judged is because the young man died before showing his childhood friend what kind of reaction he would have to her plastic surgery.

 

In the OVA Death Billiards from 2013, Kurokami (I'm just going to start calling black-haired girl this because in the closing credits, she's called kuro kami no onna 黒髪の女) did all that "First! Second! Third! Fourth! Fifth!" in laying out the rules, so it's fun to see her do that for the series.

 

In that OVA, it wasn't clear whether those two people died in the same place, just that they died at the same time. In the series, the two couples we've seen so far have died in the same place and time.

 

Because the young man was woken up on a couch, we didn't see whether he came down an elevator with the demon mask over it. I'm still not sure this matters or not. But we did get confirmation that the masks show where the souls are going to end up after playing the game.

 

Kurokami did a little "you go girl" fist clench when the young woman scored her date with the man she loved.

 

Quin Decim needs to work on his joke delivery.

Oh Konohamaru, never change. Nice liberal use of "dattebayo" to sell the impersonation, but Neji still saw through that sexy no jutsu. Naruto just does it better. No shame in admitting that.

 

During the first chuunin exams, the challenge was communicating with your teammates without the proctors catching you. Ninjas are all about cheating, after all, and teamwork. This time around, Shikamaru devised a challenge for teamwork when the team has been separated. Some of the ninjas with sensory skills have an advantage, but any shinobi team could be caught in a situation like this, so this is still a test of teamwork.

 

We've seen some of these Sand Village girls before. They're the number one fangirls for the dreamy Gaara!
 

All the Shikamaru x Temari fans are swooning over their banter.

 

We're going to see how Neji jumped right to Jounin class during this filler arc. Good stuff.

Reverse death flag? That was pretty good. I felt they were pouring it on pretty thick with Mutsuki waiting to tell her sister ship Kisaragi something after the mission was over, but then to have Kisaragi trigger the flag instead was an interesting turn of events. Oh, I'm sure she'll be back as an Abyssal Fleet member and there'll be all the angst that entails.

 

Akagi's point about being open with your feelings with your fleet mates was well taken. They are military personnel after all in a time of war, so any chance you have to tell your friends your feelings of friendship, gratitude, whatever, is a chance you need to take to live without regrets.

 

The eye catch wants you to focus on the Secretary Ships Nagato and Mutsu.

Bonus points to any show dealing with the Catholic Church that actually uses "Yahweh" when talking about the Holy Father.

 

Oh man. Don't ever debate theology with an archangel. All of human history worshipping all sorts of gods, and Michael tells it like it is: "The prayers of people are not requests, nor are they commands. They are actions of this world, which the Heavens do not mediate." This reminds me of one of the great aphorisms of the Christian apologist C.S. Lewis - "Prayer does not change God. It changes me."

 

Hey, you think it's a coincidence that Maria's love interest is named Joseph? I don't think so. Also, the woman in the village who's known her the longest is named Martha. Martha was the sister of another Mary, who were both sisters to Lazarus. Also not a coincidence.

 

Hahaha! Maria is so innocent she has to make fuzzy clouds to hide Priapus' lack of genitalia. She's obviously taken lessons on censorship from the Japanese media. Artemis feels the frustration.

Ange meets the inhabitants of the True Earth and learns its relationship to her own world, Mana, and Embryo.

Hmm.

Well, that was quite the exposition dump. In the last two episodes, we have learned everything we need to know about what's been going on before Ange got shipped off to Arzenal. We know that Embryo started over in another dimension after ruining the original world with his use of Dragunium particles. While he set up a new world using mana, the original survivors followed the example of Aura, the first person to adapt to the Dragunium infused world. Unfortunately for Embryo, mana uses Dragunium too, and the new magic users quickly used up their own sources. Embryo kidnapped Aura and began to use her to distribute mana. Then Aura got used up, but Embryo decided to use the male dragons who collected Dragunium crystals to refill Aura's own reservoir. And that's what all the fighting is about. The people of true earth, who can take on the form of dragons have been trying to rescue their venerated elder while Embryo has been directing his new genetically modified people to collect the male dragons who cross over to resupply their mana. The ancient people, like Tusk, were the ones who were there before Embryo decided to wipe the slate clean.

 

A couple of things are still unanswered. First, the significance of these rings Ange and Alektra had. Were they Dragunium stones? Second, what will Ange do now? The rebels in the other dimension don't seem to know anything about another world filled with dragons. The dragons have their own agents over there still trying to rescue Aura. Will she join in the rescue? Will that align with her goal to oppose Embryo? Third, what's with the singing? We've still got quite a bit of plot to go through, and probably many more situations for Tusk and Ange to land in each other's crotch, so I'm already looking forward to the next episode.

Anime Questions Ice Bucket Challenge!

Okay, there is no ice bucket involved with these questions, but the tagging nature of The Inspector Green Tag reminded me of the ALS ice bucket challenge from last August. Yes, I got challenged, and icy wet too. But just like then, I'll invoke my curmudgeon card (complete with rake of doom) and tell you kids to get off my lawn. However, I will happily answer your questions from my driveway.

The black haired woman gets a behind the scenes look at Quin Decim judging last week's couple.

Heh.

Nobody in this show has a name. Quin Decim is actually just quindecim, latin for 15, and he's the arbiter on the 15th floor. Clavis the elevator operator is just clavis, latin for key. Nona, Decim's superior, is just nonaginta, latin for 90, because she occupies the 90th floor.

 

Decim is an odd one. Those hanging figures we saw last week were just mannequins. His hobby is making mannequins. That suggests he relies too much on external appearances instead of paying attention to people's feelings, which is something Nona chides him for in not noticing that Machiko could have been lying about her extramarital affair at the end of last week's episode.

 

I'm not sure what the penalties for a mistake in sending a soul to the void would be. Nona didn't act like he made a major mistake, so perhaps he did make the correct one, in her view, but came to the judgment in an incorrect or incomplete manner. We saw that Decim, and presumably Nona, received the couple's lifetime memories, whereas the black-haired woman did not. They had more relevant information to sift through than just what the two were presenting during their time on the 15th floor. Still, Black-haired woman showed more imagination for a woman's intentions than Decim did.

 

Decim likes jellyfish too, judging from that big aquarium and the chandelier.
